- Providenciales,
or Provo, is The Caribbean's Best
Kept Secret. This British Crown Colony truly lives up
to its trademark, "Beautiful By Nature." When you combine
flawless white sand beaches, turquoise waters with an underwater canopy
second to none, and friendly local residents, you have a vacation destination
to indeed renew your Mind, Body, Spirit, & Soul. Daily flights on
Delta
Airlines from Atlanta and American Airlines from Miami cover
the 575 miles from Miami, Florida southeast to Provo in just less than
90 minutes. There are weekly charter flights originating from Toronto,
Montreal, Detroit, Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Atlanta, as well
as local connections to and from The Bahamas, Cuba, Dominican Republic,
Puerto Rico and Haiti.
- The climate is
perfect, with year round temperatures averaging 83° F (28° C). The hottest
months are September & October, when temperatures can reach 90 to
95° F (33 to 35° C). The almost-constant easterly trade winds temper
the heat and keep life comfortable. No wonder these islands are called
"The Isles of Perpetual June." The nights here are clear:
so clear that a quarter moon casts a shadow, and a full moon lights
up the entire landscape. Stargazing provides a truly amazing show every
night. We would advise you to bring along a light sweater or jacket,
as some evenings can be breezy.
- There is a $15
U.S. airport departure tax per person; no tax levied for children under
12. We would advise that all children traveling to Providenciales be
listed on one parent's passport should they not have their own. Picture
ID and birth certificates are acceptable identification for those traveling
from Canada or the U.S. for entry and departure, though a passport is
your best identification when traveling anywhere.
- The electricity
(110 volts, 60 cycles) is suitable for all North American appliances.
- Cable & Wireless
provides telecommunications: worldwide direct dialing, telex, facsimile,
and Internet services. Rent a digital camera and e-mail a picture of
yourself standing on the beach to the folks back home. Multi-channel
satellite television is provided by WIV-TV with 33 channels available
from the U.S. and Canada.
- The principal language
of the Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI) is English, though over the
years many of our visitors have become residents, thus bringing a multitude
of languages from around the world.
- The United States
dollar is the primary currency of TCI. Travelers cheques in U.S. dollars
are widely accepted with identification, and other currency can be cashed
at one of the local banks. American Express, Visa, and MasterCard are
welcomed by most establishments and are represented locally.
- Transportation
is readily available from cars, jeeps, vans, and scooters to boats.
We strongly recommend renting a vehicle to take advantage of what Provo
has to offer. Remember: we drive on the left side of the road here.
Reservations can be made through local offices. Taxi service is also
available.
- Visitors may bring
into the Islands for their own use: one carton of cigarettes, one bottle
of liquor or wine, and some perfume. The importation of all firearms,
including those charged with compressed air, without prior approval
in writing from the Commissioner of Police, is strictly forbidden. Spear
guns, Hawaiian slings, controlled drugs, and pornography also are illegal.

- Sporting activities
are centered on the water. You can choose from deep-sea, reef, or bone
fishing, sailing excursions, windsurfing, waterskiing, parasailing,
snorkeling, scuba diving and beachcombing. Pristine reefs, abundant
marine life, and excellent visibility make Providenciales one of the
top dive destinations in the world today. Remember to bring a disposable
underwater camera. Tennis and golf are very popular for land lovers.
Provo boasts an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Karl Litton.
Golfers will enjoy the beauty and challenge of this course, so start
practicing and bring extra balls. The island is an eco-tourist's paradise.
There are 33 areas set aside as National Park Nature Reserves, sanctuaries,
and areas of historical interest to explore where you can take in this
unspoiled wilderness and native flora and fauna. Do not forget your
camera and bring lots of film. If that is not enough, the Island offers
bicycle rentals, kayaking, aerial cruising and more. For you workout
fanatics, Provo offers two fully equipped fitness centers. Yoga or aerobics
anyone?
- There are full
service supermarkets, liquor stores, doctors, lawyers, churches, and
even a casino to try your luck. Many stores and galleries feature local
native art, while others offer Duty-Free shopping. With over 50 restaurants
on Provo, we are sure to tempt your taste buds, offering a variety of
cuisines from local Native to Italian, French, Chinese, Persian, Thai,
Intercontinental, and much more. Gourmet Magazine featured
the excellent local restaurants of Provo and the Turks and Caicos Islands
in a 12-page article in 1998. Partake of everything from local native
dishes to fresh fish caught daily, lobster thermidor, Black Angus steaks,
and pasta dishes from local Italian chefs. Of course we have classics
like pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken wings
or try the
island favorite, conch fritters. Local musical artists perform nightly
at a number of venues, and the disco is open to the wee hours of the
morning at Club Med.
